How thoughts affect your body

Why my heart beats faster when you have to speak in public? Why do we blush when they feel embarrassed? Why do our muscles tense up when we're asked to do something that we do not like? Why a cat arches her back.

Emotions involve physiological reactions as a preparation for certain activities. When you're scared, your body is mobilized to escape, and when you are angry, your body is mobilized to attack and when you're depressed, your body is mobilized (or demobilized) to avoid from taking action, and when you're happy, it is mobilized to the increased activity .

If you could assess the condition of your body in times of strong excitation, the observed changes would take place simultaneously: the muscle tension, heart palpitations, reduced saliva flow, the release of glucose and adrenaline in the blood, increased blood clotting, blood flow to the skin, especially on the hands and legs. The latter explains why the fearful descent skiers are freezing more than confident.

All these reactions have developed through evolution, to prepare the animal to act in critical situations. Rapid breathing and heartbeat give you the ability to act more vigorously. Tension mobilize them for heavy load.

Release of glucose into the blood gives an instant influx of energy and adrenaline flow increases the activity of other important systems. In times of danger your body does not need an influx of energy to the organs of digestion, which supplies energy to "long-acting", in these moments you need a quick burst of energy. Increased blood clotting and its outflow from the surface of the body reduces blood loss in case of injury.
