In Greece, the spouses, which keep a vegetarian diet, refused to adopt a child, reports the Herald Sun. A couple of Heraklion, which is the administrative center of the Greek island of Crete, intends to appeal the decision of the urban social welfare services in court.
The specialists of agencies suspect that the adoptive parents would limit child's diet in line with their beliefs. The head of Spyros Epitropakis (Spyros Epitropakis) said that the decision to refuse the adoption was made based on consultations with experts of the University of Crete Medical School. According to the medics, adequate diet the child should include meat, fish and other animal products.
According Epitropakisa, Social Security was supposed to make sure that the child would be treated properly. He also noted that the final decision on the adoption will take the court, which will consider the complaint of the spouses on March 16.
Pediatrician and a nutritionist from the University of Crete, Antonis Kafatos (Antonis Kafatos), in turn, called wanton refusal of the authorities to adopt a child. In his view, children need the fish and other seafood, as well as milk. "However, if the adoptive parents are not going to feed the child in accordance with your diet, problems with the adoption should be no" - added Kafatos.
The refusal of the Greek authorities can be attributed to serious concerns for the health of the child. There have been cases where children are brought up in families vegetarians, developed with impaired and even die because of such a diet. In particular, in 2008 in a Scottish girl whose parents did not allow meat and milk, developed a severe form of rickets. In 2003, the daughter of Americans who practiced the use of exclusively raw food (raw food), died from malnutrition and severe vitamin deficiency. Five-month weight girls at the time of death was two times less age norms.
